from Best Consultancy for Canada PR Visa. Meanwhile, here is an Indian
immigrant who succeeded in immigrating to Canada and getting a job offer –
Himanshu Reddy (33 years). He moved to Canada in the summer of 2022 and shares
his story of exploring the job market and overcoming challenges to get a job.
While on the personal front, it was not much tough, professional life did throw
up its share of challenges.
Exploring Toronto
for a place to stay
“When I landed in Toronto in 2022 July, I had 2 major
priorities. One was to find a place for staying and the second was to get a
job. There was no job offer with me when I landed and was aware that it was a
big step. I was assured regarding my competencies and skills and thus was
certain of moving to Canada and exploring the job market.
I surfed in AIRBNB to search for accommodation but
the prices were soaring. I was sure that it was not the right place to seek
me. Afterward, I searched on the website
HOMESTAYS. I got in touch with a family here that was seeking to rent out a
bedroom in their home. Location wise it was a good option as it required
walking only 5 minutes to reach the public transport.
Acquainting with
the Canadian job market
The Canadian job market was fully new to me and I had
to find out the sought-after traits by employers in prospective candidates. I
understood that required certifications which were quite new for me. These
requirements are not often discussed in India.
Digital Marketing consists of several minute niches
and I did have experience in all of them. Canada has both Generalist and
Specialist roles in this domain. I belong to the former and thus had to obtain
certification in all of these niches for demonstrating my expertise.
So this was among the key challenges for me because
it was not expected owing to my background in India as employers here only
emphasized previous work experience.
Nevertheless, I recognized that I was in a new
country and will have to demonstrate my competencies.
ACCES Employment is an organization that supported me
in identifying the options available and helped me integrate into the Canadian
job market. I was offered by them a Certification Course of 6 weeks managed in
collaboration with Humber College. It helped me to understand the work culture,
workplace ethics, and job market in Canada.
Streamlining the
job focus opened avenues
The initial job search was highly challenging for me
and required almost 3 months. Though I applied for job vacancies I did not get
even initial invites for connecting with HR. But later I understood that the
need was to streamline the focus of job search even for Generalist roles.
I had to stop attempting to do everything and had to
be very specific in highlighting what I was seeking. It required customizing my
Resume for the particular job role and nothing beyond that.
It proved to be my turning point.
The alteration made a huge difference and I received
several interviews and unlocked opportunities for getting in touch with
industry professionals. Furthermore, I got a chance from ACCES to participate
in a virtual and accelerated mentoring event. I could interact with different
mentors working in diverse firms and with each for ten minutes.
Familiarizing with
culture in Canada
Traversing borders across nations is not an easy
thing to do. It is even tougher when it is to a developed nation from a
developing nation. The scale is fully dissimilar and learned that what
Canadians perceived as bad or good was everything good for me.
Whenever I came across residents in Canada who
complained about traffic, I thought they have witnessed nothing. Figuring out
dissimilarities in terms of developing and developed nations can take a while.
But I am trying my best to maximize my exposure to Canadian culture for quickly
grasping things.
To me getting familiar with the culture in Canada is
more important than staying within my people and culture. In Canada, it is my
focus to blend with people from new cultures as I am already familiar with
Indian cultures.
I am particular about visiting downtown Toronto on
Saturdays to play board games at bubble tea and participating in events that
the cocktail lounge host. The people in Canada are nice and very polite. The
smiling faces all over make it stress-free to adjust”.
